Flying KLM Business Class from Santiago de Chile to Amsterdam via Buenos Aires is no ordinary long-haul experience.
On August 9, 2026, I travelled aboard KLM’s Boeing 777-200ER in World Business Class on flight KL702, a nearly 17-hour journey across South America and the Atlantic Ocean.
With two Boeing 777 takeoffs and landings, spectacular views of the Andes Mountains, and almost an entire day spent travelling in Business Class, this is one of KLM’s more unusual long-haul services.
I booked the entire journey for 114,000 SAS EuroBonus points and just $170 in taxes and fees.
But is KLM’s Business Class worth booking on such a long journey, particularly with the additional stop in Buenos Aires?
Quick Verdict: 9/10
KLM delivers an excellent Business Class experience on the Boeing 777-200ER, with an outstanding cabin crew, memorable dining and impressive privacy thanks to the refurbished suites with sliding doors.
The spectacular Andes crossing makes this route particularly special, while the excellent onboard service and comfortable cabin make the long journey considerably more enjoyable.
However, the additional stop in Buenos Aires adds travel time, and the fully flat bed can feel a little firm without a mattress topper.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Excellent and attentive cabin crew | Additional stop in Buenos Aires |
| Outstanding onboard dining | No mattress topper |
| Private suites with sliding doors | Bed can feel slightly firm |
| Spectacular views of the Andes | Basic lounge experience in Santiago |
| Excellent EuroBonus redemption value | Longer journey than a nonstop alternative |
Overall rating: 9/10 — An excellent Business Class experience, especially for aviation enthusiasts and travellers who appreciate great service, privacy and memorable inflight dining.

Booking KLM Business Class with EuroBonus Points
I booked the entire journey using 114,000 SAS EuroBonus points, paying just $170 in taxes and fees.
Considering the length of the journey and the opportunity to experience two separate flights aboard KLM’s Boeing 777-200ER, I found this to be excellent value.
One of the things that makes this particular route interesting is the intermediate stop in Buenos Aires.
While it extends the overall travel time, it also provides two takeoffs and landings, two onboard meal services, and the opportunity to experience the spectacular Andes crossing between Chile and Argentina.
For someone who enjoys flying as much as I do, that’s certainly not a bad deal.
Of course, whether this represents good value for everyone depends on the alternative award tickets and cash fares available when booking.
Ground Experience at Santiago Airport (SCL)
My journey began at Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport, where I was scheduled to depart for Buenos Aires on the first leg of KLM flight KL702.
With no checked baggage, the airport experience was straightforward. Security was surprisingly quick, and I was soon making my way through the international terminal.
One thing worth keeping in mind at Santiago Airport is the potentially long walking distances.
Depending on your departure gate, getting around the terminal can take some time, so I would recommend allowing a little extra time even when security queues are short.

SkyTeam Lounge at Santiago Airport
As a KLM World Business Class passenger, I had access to the SkyTeam Lounge, located in Terminal 2, Pier E, close to the departure area used by KLM and Air France.
Unfortunately, the lounge was rather underwhelming.
The atmosphere reminded me more of a canteen than a premium airport lounge. Everything felt fairly basic, and it certainly wasn’t among the better lounges I’ve visited.
That said, it was perfectly adequate for a short visit of around an hour before departure.
There was somewhere to sit and relax before the flight, but I wouldn’t recommend arriving especially early just to experience this lounge.

Boarding KLM Flight KL702
One advantage of the lounge’s location was the short walk to my departure gate.
Boarding began on time, and there were relatively few passengers travelling on the first sector from Santiago to Buenos Aires.
Overall, it was a smooth and uncomplicated start to what would become a nearly 17-hour journey back to Europe.

KLM Boeing 777-200ER Business Class Cabin & Seat 6A
My first impression of KLM’s Boeing 777-200ER Business Class cabin was excellent.
The interior felt bright, spacious and very clean. Although the Boeing 777-200ER is an older aircraft type, KLM’s refurbished cabin gives it a fresh and modern appearance.
KLM has replaced its older 2-2-2 Business Class configuration with a much more passenger-friendly 1-2-1 layout.
Every passenger now has direct aisle access and an individual suite with a sliding privacy door.
The refurbished seats also feature personal storage, charging options and a fully flat bed measuring approximately 198 cm in length.
It’s a significant improvement over KLM’s previous generation of Boeing 777 Business Class seats.

Seat 6A: One of My Favourite Seats on the Boeing 777
For this journey, I had selected seat 6A, a window seat on the left side of the aircraft.
Personally, I consider 6A one of the best seats on KLM’s Boeing 777-200ER, particularly if you enjoy watching the engines during flight.
The engine view from this seat is fantastic, making it an excellent choice for aviation enthusiasts.
Another major advantage of KLM’s refurbished Business Class is the privacy.
The sliding door creates a much more secluded space, something I particularly appreciate on long overnight flights.
Combined with the modern cabin design and generous personal space, the overall impression was very positive.

Welcome Drinks and Onboard Amenities
Waiting for me at seat 6A was a pillow, but no blanket or amenity kit was provided on this first sector to Buenos Aires.
Considering that this was only a flight of around two hours, I wasn’t particularly concerned about the lack of additional amenities.
Before departure, the cabin crew offered a selection of welcome drinks, including water, juice, Champagne and beer.
I went for a beer.
I was still a little jet-lagged and had somehow forgotten that it was only around nine in the morning.
But hey, it was going to be a long journey back to Europe!

Santiago to Buenos Aires: A Spectacular Flight Across the Andes
We pushed back from Santiago Airport right on schedule and took off towards the south, before turning east towards the Andes Mountains.
As is often the case during the Chilean winter, Santiago was covered by a layer of smog, limiting the views of the city below.
However, the spectacular Andes Mountains rising in the background more than made up for it.

Flying Over the Andes Mountains
Just a few minutes after takeoff, we made a left turn towards the Andes, and this is where the flight became truly unforgettable.
The views were absolutely breathtaking.
I was incredibly lucky with the weather conditions, which provided almost perfect visibility for filming.
Watching the enormous mountain range unfold beneath the aircraft was easily one of the highlights of the entire journey.
The Andes crossing is also an area where turbulence can be a concern, and passengers may be asked to remain seated with their seatbelts fastened as a precaution.
For aviation enthusiasts, this short flight between Santiago and Buenos Aires is an experience in itself.
On a clear day, the mountain scenery makes it one of the most spectacular flights you can take in South America.

KLM Business Class Lunch Service
Once we had crossed the Andes, the cabin crew began preparing lunch.
The service started with drinks, and this time I decided to have a glass of red wine.
Despite the relatively short flight, KLM offered a proper Business Class meal, and it turned out to be absolutely delicious.
The main course consisted of wonderfully tender chicken, accompanied by a side dish that reminded me of South American ceviche.
Dessert was a traditional-style meringue creation, providing a sweet finish to an already excellent lunch.
Everything was beautifully presented, and I was particularly impressed by how efficient the cabin crew were.
With such a short flight time, there was very little time to spare, yet the service was handled remarkably well.

An Early Arrival in Buenos Aires
Another interesting aspect of this flight was our speed.
At one point, we were travelling at a ground speed of approximately 1,100 km/h, likely helped by strong tailwinds.
As a result, the flight from Santiago to Buenos Aires took just around one hour and twenty minutes in the air, considerably shorter than the scheduled two-hour gate-to-gate journey.
Considering that the cabin crew had managed to serve a complete Business Class lunch during this time, their efficiency was particularly impressive.
We eventually touched down at Buenos Aires Ezeiza Airport ahead of schedule, welcomed by beautiful winter sunshine.
The first leg of KL702 had been an excellent experience.
Between the spectacular Andes crossing, delicious lunch and attentive crew, it was difficult to imagine a better start to the journey back to Amsterdam.

KLM KL702 Transit in Buenos Aires: What to Expect
One of the more unusual aspects of KLM flight KL702 is the scheduled 1-hour and 50-minute stop at Buenos Aires Ezeiza Airport (EZE) before continuing to Amsterdam.
While this makes the journey longer than a nonstop flight, my experience was that the connection was surprisingly straightforward.
A Quick and Easy Transfer at Ezeiza
After arriving in Buenos Aires, the cabin crew informed continuing passengers that we would need to return to the gate in approximately 40 minutes for boarding.
We disembarked and followed the transit procedure for passengers continuing on KL702.
Fortunately, the process was very simple.
There was a dedicated transit checkpoint for KLM passengers, and in my case, it took approximately five minutes to complete the process and return to the airside departures area.
This made the stop considerably less inconvenient than I had initially expected.
Of course, procedures and waiting times can vary, but based on my experience, the intermediate stop was easy to manage.

Aerolíneas Argentinas Salón Cóndor Lounge
As a KLM World Business Class passenger, I also had access to the Aerolíneas Argentinas Salón Cóndor, the SkyTeam lounge at Buenos Aires Ezeiza Airport.
With limited time before boarding, I decided to make a quick visit.
The lounge itself was fairly basic, although it offered everything needed for a short stop.
There was a decent amount of seating, a reasonable selection of food and drinks, and space to relax before continuing the journey.
It certainly wasn’t among the most impressive airport lounges I’ve visited, but for a brief transit stop, it served its purpose perfectly well.
Another advantage was the short walking distance to my departure gate.
After leaving the lounge, I was back at the gate within minutes, ready to board the Boeing 777 once again.
For a more detailed look at the lounge, you can read my Aerolíneas Argentinas Salón Cóndor Lounge Review.

Is the Buenos Aires Stop Worth It?
For passengers simply looking to travel from Santiago to Europe as quickly as possible, the additional stop in Buenos Aires is undoubtedly a disadvantage.
However, for aviation enthusiasts, it also adds something special to the journey.
Not only do you get to experience two Boeing 777 takeoffs and landings, but the first sector includes the spectacular Andes crossing and an additional onboard meal service.
Personally, I found the transit easy enough that it didn’t significantly detract from the overall experience.
Buenos Aires to Amsterdam: KLM 777 Business Class Experience
Boarding and Departure from Buenos Aires
Boarding for the second leg of KL702 began on time.
Passengers travelling all the way from Santiago to Amsterdam keep their assigned seats, so I was back in my familiar seat 6A.
Unlike the relatively quiet first sector, the Business Class cabin was now much busier and appeared to be completely full.
Waiting at my seat was a fresh pillow, along with a blanket and an amenity kit, neither of which had been provided on the shorter flight from Santiago.
The cabin crew once again offered welcome drinks and distributed the menus for the long flight ahead.

We pushed back approximately five minutes behind schedule before taking off towards the west.
Shortly after departure, we made a U-turn, offering fantastic views of Ezeiza Airport, followed by Buenos Aires and the enormous Río de la Plata.
As we continued across Uruguay, the crew began preparing dinner.

KLM World Business Class Dinner Service
The dinner experience turned out to be one of the absolute highlights of the entire journey.

Service began with a refreshing hot towel, followed by a selection of drinks.
I chose a glass of red wine, accompanied by a small bowl of nuts.
Shortly afterwards, the first course arrived: a delicious ham salad served with warm bread and a smaller side salad.
Everything tasted fresh, and the presentation was excellent.

For the main course, I selected the chicken, which turned out to be surprisingly good.
It was crispy on the outside, wonderfully tender and juicy on the inside.
At this point, I was genuinely impressed by the quality of KLM’s onboard catering.
Having already enjoyed an excellent lunch between Santiago and Buenos Aires, I certainly hadn’t expected the second meal to be just as good.

Dessert consisted of a small selection of sweet treats, including macarons, chocolate and other delicacies inspired by Argentina.
The meal ended with one of KLM’s charming little touches: a chocolate shaped like a traditional Dutch house.
By the time dinner was finished, we were already flying over Brazil, and the sun was beginning to set.

An Evening Above the Atlantic: Privacy and Entertainment
As the sun slowly disappeared beyond the horizon, it was time to settle in for the night.
This is where KLM’s refurbished Boeing 777 Business Class really shines.
With the privacy door closed, seat 6A felt like my own little suite above the clouds.
Watching the last daylight outside while enjoying the privacy of the enclosed seat was a wonderful experience.
Before going to sleep, I decided to explore the inflight entertainment system and put on a movie.

KLM offers a very good selection of films, with plenty of choices for a long flight.
The selection of television series was somewhat less impressive, although that’s something I’ve experienced on several other airlines as well.
Overall, the entertainment system offered more than enough to keep me occupied before getting some rest.

Sleeping in KLM’s Boeing 777 Business Class
After watching a movie, I converted my seat into a fully flat bed and closed the privacy door.
The bed itself is spacious, with plenty of length and width to stretch out comfortably.
However, I did find the sleeping surface a little firmer than I would have liked.
This is one area where KLM could improve its Business Class product.
A proper mattress topper would make a noticeable difference, particularly on long overnight flights.
That said, the privacy of the enclosed suite, combined with the quiet cabin atmosphere, made it easy to relax.
Despite the slightly firm mattress, I managed to get a solid seven hours of sleep.
Not bad at all!
Breakfast and Arrival in Amsterdam
I woke up to a beautiful sunrise as we continued towards Europe.
Shortly afterwards, the cabin crew began the breakfast service, starting once again with a hot towel.
For breakfast, I chose a potato omelette served with vegetables and smoked salmon.
The meal was accompanied by bread, natural yoghurt with granola, fresh fruit and, of course, a cup of coffee served in KLM’s elegant tableware.
It was a satisfying breakfast and a lovely way to start the day after a good night’s sleep.

Not long afterwards, we were flying over the United Kingdom and beginning our final approach towards Amsterdam.
Before landing, the cabin crew came around with one of KLM’s most famous traditions: the Delft Blue miniature houses.
These small ceramic houses, traditionally filled with Dutch gin, are given to World Business Class passengers on intercontinental flights.
Each represents a real building in the Netherlands and has become a popular collector’s item.
It’s a charming tradition and one of those small touches that makes flying KLM Business Class feel special.
We eventually landed at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport approximately 15 minutes ahead of schedule, bringing our nearly 17-hour journey from Santiago to an end.

Final Verdict: Is KLM Boeing 777 Business Class Worth It?
Overall rating: 9/10
After nearly 17 hours of travelling from Santiago to Amsterdam via Buenos Aires, I can confidently say that this was one of my most enjoyable KLM Business Class experiences.
What impressed me most was the cabin crew.
Across both sectors, the service was friendly, attentive and remarkably efficient. Managing to provide such an excellent lunch during the short flight across the Andes was particularly impressive.
The onboard dining was another major highlight.
Both lunch and dinner exceeded my expectations, with delicious food, excellent presentation and a genuinely enjoyable dining experience.
KLM’s refurbished Boeing 777 Business Class cabin also deserves praise. The modern suites with sliding privacy doors provide excellent personal space, and seat 6A was particularly enjoyable thanks to the fantastic engine views.
When the sun began setting over Brazil, closing the privacy door and settling into my own little suite was one of those moments that reminded me why I enjoy flying Business Class so much.
There are, however, a few areas where KLM could improve.
The lack of a mattress topper means that the fully flat bed can feel slightly firm, even though I still managed seven hours of sleep.
The lounge experience in Santiago was also fairly basic, and the additional stop in Buenos Aires naturally makes the journey longer than a nonstop alternative.
For travellers whose priority is simply reaching Europe as quickly as possible, I would recommend comparing the total journey time with other available options.
But for aviation enthusiasts, and for passengers who appreciate excellent service, enjoyable dining and a private cabin, KL702 offers something genuinely special.
The spectacular Andes crossing, two Boeing 777 flights and surprisingly straightforward transit in Buenos Aires make this an experience rather than simply a way of getting from A to B.
And having paid just 114,000 EuroBonus points and $170 in taxes and fees, I was particularly pleased with the value of my booking.
Would I fly KLM World Business Class on this route again? Absolutely.
KLM gets the most important things right: excellent service, enjoyable dining, a comfortable and private cabin, and an overall experience that makes a long journey something to look forward to.
Final score: 9/10 — Highly recommended.
