Iberia Launches €6 Billion “Flight Plan 2030” to Expand Long-Haul Fleet

Airline News

Iberia has announced its most ambitious growth strategy yet: Flight Plan 2030, a €6 billion ($6.9 billion) investment that will transform the airline over the next five years.

Fleet Expansion: From 45 to 70 Long-Haul Aircraft

At the center of the plan is a significant fleet expansion. Iberia’s long-haul fleet, currently at 45 aircraft, will grow to 70 widebody and long-range Airbus planes by 2030. This includes a mix of the fuel-efficient Airbus A350, the upcoming A330neo, and the versatile A321XLR, which allows Iberia to operate thinner long-haul routes with lower demand.

Focus on Passenger Experience

Beyond adding aircraft, Iberia aims to modernize its cabins across all classes with updated seating, improved inflight entertainment, and more sustainable operations. Business Class and Premium Economy are expected to see the most noticeable upgrades, as the airline competes directly with Air France, KLM, and LATAM on transatlantic routes.

Strengthening Madrid as a Global Hub

Madrid-Barajas Airport will remain the cornerstone of Iberia’s strategy. With Latin America as its strongest market, the carrier wants to solidify Madrid’s role as the leading transatlantic hub in Southern Europe, connecting Europe with South America more efficiently than competitors.

Aiming Higher in the Global Rankings

With this plan, Iberia is not just growing—it is positioning itself as a serious global player. By increasing efficiency, improving passenger comfort, and expanding its route network, the airline hopes to climb higher in worldwide rankings and attract more international travelers.
