Air France or KLM—which offers the better long-haul Business Class experience? Having flown both airlines from Lima to Europe, I had the opportunity to compare their Boeing 777 Business Class products firsthand.
And the result was surprisingly close.
Air France impressed me with its comfortable bed, excellent dining experience and luxurious food presentation. KLM, meanwhile, offered a more modern Business Class seat with a privacy door, a particularly approachable crew and thoughtful details that made the experience feel special.
Both airlines have their strengths, and neither is significantly better in every category. However, if I had to choose, KLM would narrowly come out on top.
It’s important to mention that I’m comparing KLM’s newer Boeing 777 Business Class cabin with the older Air France Business Class product I experienced, rather than Air France’s latest suites.
So, where does each airline perform better, and which would I recommend?
Air France vs KLM Business Class: Quick Verdict
After experiencing both airlines on overnight flights from Lima to Europe, KLM is my overall winner, but only by a small margin.
KLM impressed me with its modern Business Class seat, privacy door and particularly friendly, approachable cabin crew. The airline also pays attention to small details, from its beautifully designed cutlery to the famous Delft Blue miniature houses given to Business Class passengers.
Air France, however, has some advantages of its own. I found its bed more comfortable thanks to the mattress topper, while the dining experience felt slightly more luxurious, particularly when it came to food presentation.
Here’s how the two airlines compared during my flights.
| Category | My Preferred Airline |
|---|---|
| Business Class seat and privacy | KLM |
| Bed and sleeping comfort | Air France |
| Food and presentation | Air France |
| Cabin crew and service | KLM |
| Unique details and finishing touches | KLM |
| Overall experience | KLM — by a narrow margin |
My verdict: Both airlines offer excellent long-haul Business Class experiences. However, when comparing these particular Boeing 777 cabins, I would choose KLM again.
The Flights: Air France Boeing 777 vs KLM Boeing 777
For this comparison, I flew Business Class on two overnight flights from Lima, Peru, to Europe.
My first flight was with Air France on a Boeing 777-200ER from Lima to Paris Charles de Gaulle in January 2025. Just over a year later, in February 2026, I flew KLM’s Boeing 777-300ER from Lima to Amsterdam Schiphol.
Both flights offered an excellent opportunity to experience the airlines’ long-haul Business Class products on similar routes.
| Flight Details | Air France | KLM |
|---|---|---|
| Route | Lima–Paris | Lima–Amsterdam |
| Aircraft | Boeing 777-200ER | Boeing 777-300ER |
| Cabin | Business Class | Business Class |
| Travel date | January 2025 | February 2026 |
| Flight type | Overnight long-haul | Overnight long-haul |
There is, however, one important difference.
The Air France aircraft featured an older Business Class cabin, while KLM offered its more modern Business Class seats with privacy doors.
This is therefore a comparison of the specific cabins I experienced, rather than every Business Class product offered by either airline.

Air France vs KLM Business Class Seats and Comfort
Both Air France and KLM offer comfortable, fully flat Business Class seats on their Boeing 777 aircraft. However, there are a few differences worth mentioning.
KLM has the advantage when it comes to privacy and cabin design. Its newer Business Class seats feature sliding privacy doors, creating a more private and personal space during the flight.
The Air France Boeing 777-200ER I flew had an older Business Class cabin without privacy doors. Nevertheless, I found the seat comfortable, and in terms of space and general seating comfort, the two products felt remarkably similar.
Where Air France really impressed me was the sleeping experience. Its mattress topper made the bed particularly comfortable, giving it an advantage over KLM when it was time to sleep.
My verdict: I slightly preferred KLM’s Business Class seat overall, mainly because of its modern design and privacy door. However, Air France offered the more comfortable bed.

Sleeping Comfort: Which Airline Has the Better Bed?
When it comes to sleeping comfort, Air France was the clear winner for me.
Both airlines offer fully flat Business Class seats, but I found the bed on Air France noticeably more comfortable.
One of the biggest differences was the mattress topper provided by Air France. It made the seat feel softer and more like a proper bed, something I particularly appreciated on an overnight flight from Lima to Europe.
The pillow and blanket also felt of better quality on Air France, adding to the overall sleeping experience.
And perhaps most importantly, I actually slept better on Air France than on KLM.
KLM’s Business Class seat was still comfortable, and its privacy door was a welcome feature. However, when it came to the quality of the bedding and getting a good night’s sleep, I preferred Air France.
My verdict: Air France wins this category thanks to its more comfortable mattress, better-quality bedding and overall sleeping experience.

Air France vs KLM Business Class Food and Drinks
Food is an important part of the long-haul Business Class experience, and both Air France and KLM delivered excellent meals on my flights from Lima to Europe.
When it comes to taste, I found the two airlines remarkably similar. Both served enjoyable meals, and neither stood out as significantly better than the other.
However, Air France had a slight advantage when it came to presentation. The way the food was served felt a little more refined and luxurious, giving the dining experience an extra premium touch.
KLM, on the other hand, impressed me with its attention to detail. I particularly appreciated the beautifully designed cutlery, which added character to the meal service.
Breakfast was another close comparison, with both airlines performing equally well in my experience.
Ultimately, the differences were relatively small, and I would happily dine with either airline again.
My verdict: Air France wins this category by a narrow margin, mainly thanks to its more luxurious food presentation. In terms of taste and breakfast quality, I would call it a tie.

Cabin Crew and Onboard Service: Air France vs KLM
Both Air France and KLM provided excellent service during my flights from Lima to Europe. However, I noticed a difference in how the cabin crews interacted with passengers.
Air France offered friendly and professional service, but with a slightly more formal approach. The experience felt polished and refined, which suited the airline’s premium atmosphere.
KLM, on the other hand, felt a little more relaxed and personal. I found the cabin crew particularly approachable, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout the flight.
Of course, service can vary from one crew to another, and I had positive experiences with both airlines.
Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. Some passengers might appreciate Air France’s more formal style, while others may prefer KLM’s relaxed approach.
My verdict: KLM wins this category by a small margin. Both crews were excellent, but I personally preferred KLM’s more approachable and down-to-earth service.
Air France vs KLM Business Class: Entertainment, Wi-Fi and Amenities
Both Air France and KLM offer a good selection of entertainment and amenities on their long-haul Business Class flights. However, each airline has its own strengths.
Inflight Entertainment and Wi-Fi
KLM was the clear winner when it came to inflight entertainment.
Its entertainment system felt noticeably more modern than the one onboard my Air France Boeing 777-200ER. This made KLM’s system more appealing overall.
When it came to headphones and Wi-Fi, however, the differences were much smaller. I found both airlines offered similar quality, while Wi-Fi pricing was also comparable.

Amenity Kits and Special Touches
Air France had the advantage when it came to its Business Class amenity kit.
Although both airlines provided similar types of products, the Air France amenity kit looked and felt more luxurious. Air France also provided slippers, which were a welcome addition on such a long overnight flight.
KLM, however, has something special of its own: the famous Delft Blue miniature houses given to Business Class passengers.
These collectible houses are a lovely tradition and a memorable souvenir from the flight. It’s exactly the kind of small detail that makes KLM’s Business Class experience feel unique.
My verdict: KLM wins for its more modern entertainment system, while Wi-Fi and headphone quality were similar. Air France takes the win for amenities, although KLM deserves extra credit for its charming Delft Blue houses.

Amsterdam vs Paris: Which Airport Is Better for Connections?
Another important factor when choosing between Air France and KLM is the connecting airport.
Air France operates its main hub at Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), while KLM uses Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS).
Having connected through both airports several times, I personally prefer Amsterdam Schiphol.
One of Schiphol’s biggest advantages is its single-terminal layout. The different concourses are connected, meaning passengers can generally walk between gates without taking trains or shuttle buses.
Paris Charles de Gaulle, on the other hand, has a more complicated layout. Depending on your connecting flights, you may need to use shuttle transportation between different terminal areas.
In my experience, this makes connections through Amsterdam easier and often quicker.
Another advantage of KLM is its extensive European network. The airline connects Amsterdam not only with major European capitals but also with many smaller regional cities, making it particularly convenient for travelers heading beyond the main destinations.
Of course, the best connecting airport will depend on your final destination and flight schedule.
My verdict: Amsterdam Schiphol is my preferred airport for European connections, giving KLM another advantage over Air France.

Final Verdict: Is Air France or KLM Business Class Better?
After flying both airlines in Business Class from Lima to Europe, KLM comes out as my overall favorite, but only by a very narrow margin.
I particularly enjoyed KLM’s modern Business Class seat with its privacy door, the approachable cabin crew and the small details that make the airline special. Its entertainment system was also noticeably better, while connecting through Amsterdam Schiphol is another advantage for me.
However, Air France impressed me just as much in several areas. I slept better thanks to its more comfortable mattress topper and higher-quality bedding. The dining experience also felt slightly more luxurious, and I preferred its amenity kit.
So, which airline would I choose for my next long-haul Business Class flight?
If both flights were the same price, I would choose KLM. However, if one airline offered a cheaper ticket, I would happily book whichever cost less.
The difference between these two experiences simply isn’t large enough for me to justify paying significantly more for one over the other.
It’s also worth remembering that this comparison is based on the older Air France Boeing 777-200ER Business Class cabin and KLM’s newer Boeing 777-300ER cabin. Air France’s latest Business Class suites could change the result.
Ultimately, both airlines offer excellent long-haul Business Class experiences, and I would gladly fly with either again.
My recommendation: Compare the price, aircraft and connection times before booking. If everything else is equal, KLM gets my vote — but only just.
