From efficient check-in to world-class lounge service, from spacious lie-flat seats to a stunning approach into Lima, this trip report showcases one of KLM’s flagship long-haul routes in style.

I arrived at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) on the first morning flight from Madrid, touching down around 08:30 to a beautiful winter sunrise. Schiphol is not only one of Europe’s largest and busiest airports, but also one of the easiest to navigate thanks to its single-terminal layout.

Schiphol almost feels like a “local airport,” offering a huge selection of exclusive shops, restaurants, and panoramic views of the aircraft in the Non-Schengen area. If you have extra time (and budget), it’s a fantastic spot for some last-minute luxury shopping. For me, however, the morning’s mission was clear — head straight to the KLM Crown Lounge to begin the trip in true World Business Class style.

The KLM Crown Lounge (Non-Schengen) is spacious, modern, and spread across two floors. The entrance is instantly recognizable, decorated with KLM’s iconic Delft Blue miniature houses — a signature souvenir gifted to every KLM Business Class passenger.

On the first floor, you’ll find a variety of seating areas, a self-serve buffet, and freshly brewed barista coffee. The second floor features a stylish bar and à la carte restaurant, although food and drinks here come at an additional cost. Showers and spa services are also available for a fee, perfect for freshening up before a long-haul flight.

While the lounge offers a comfortable retreat from the bustle of Amsterdam Schiphol, it can get overcrowded during peak travel times, and in my opinion, the food and beverage selection is rather average compared to other major European Business Class lounges. Still, it’s a pleasant spot to relax before boarding. I kept it light with a coffee and a few pastries — saving my appetite for the in-flight dining experience ahead.

About an hour before departure, I made my way to the gate. The aircraft taking me to Lima was a 19-year-old Boeing 777-200 (registration PH-BQL). Despite its age, the cabin has been upgraded to KLM’s latest World Business Class, featuring a 1–2–1 configuration that gives every passenger direct aisle access — a major improvement over the older 2–2–2 layout.

Boarding was well organized by groups. As a Business Class passenger, I was in Group 1, although the flight was running slightly behind schedule — not unusual for Amsterdam Schiphol.

Once on board, I was greeted by a friendly, professional crew in true Northern European style. I opted for a Heineken as my welcome drink and was presented with the menu and amenity kit. While not especially luxurious, the amenity kit had a clever design resembling a small beach bag. Inside were the essentials: skincare creams, a toothbrush, socks, and an eye mask.

The new seat in KLM’s 777 Business Class is wide, comfortable, and easily converts into a fully flat bed for a proper night’s sleep. Each seat comes equipped with a large HD screen offering a wide selection of movies and TV shows, high-quality noise-cancelling headphones, and both USB and universal power outlets for charging devices.

Bedding quality is excellent, with a soft pillow and a cozy duvet that make long-haul flights far more comfortable. I had window seat 5A, which turned out to be the perfect choice for enjoying the spectacular views of the Andes Mountains on approach to Lima.

KLM has a strong reputation for offering high-quality catering in Business Class on long-haul flights (short-haul catering is another story entirely). The first meal service included a choice of multiple starters, main courses, and desserts — all beautifully presented on classic Dutch tableware.

I opted for a pasta seafood starter, followed by chicken as the main course, and a cheese plate for dessert. Presentation was excellent, though in terms of flavor, I would say Air France still has a slight edge — based on my return flight later in the trip.

Throughout the flight, the crew passed regularly with drinks and light snacks, keeping service attentive without being intrusive. The second meal service, served before landing, featured an Asian-inspired rice dish, a fresh salad, and a dessert.
Overall, it was a very satisfying culinary experience and one of the highlights of flying KLM World Business Class is the Delft house you are gifted!

We departed Amsterdam about an hour behind schedule, heading south over France, across the Bay of Biscay off the coast of Spain, and out over the Atlantic Ocean. After roughly eight hours in the air, the coastline of South America appeared on the horizon.

This region is often known for pockets of turbulence, but today the skies were perfectly smooth — offering breathtaking views of the Amazon rainforest stretching endlessly below.

After nearly 12 hours in the air, we began our descent over the majestic Andes Mountains, a truly spectacular finale to the journey. The approach into Lima was smooth, landing ahead of sunset. Immigration was surprisingly quick and efficient, making for a stress-free arrival in Peru.

Overall, KLM’s Boeing 777 Business Class is an excellent choice for a long-haul flight to South America. The refreshed cabin feels spacious and modern, the seats are comfortable for both work and rest, and the service is consistently professional.

The catering is solid, though not quite on par with Air France on the same route. However, if you can find a good promotional fare or redeem Flying Blue miles, this is a safe, reliable, and comfortable way to travel between Europe and Peru — with the bonus of Dutch hospitality along the way.
