Iberia A330-300 Business Class Review (Madrid to London)

Asiento 8L - Iberia A330-300
Airline Review

This Iberia A330 Business Class review covers the full experience from Madrid to London Heathrow on flight IB713, including Madrid-Barajas Airport, the Iberia Velázquez Lounge, boarding, the A330-300 cabin, seat comfort, breakfast, service, entertainment, and the short but very special widebody flight to London.

This was one of those rare gems in European aviation: a widebody aircraft operating a short intra-Europe route. And honestly, that alone already made this flight feel special. Flying an Iberia Airbus A330-300 Business Class cabin from Madrid to London is not your average European hop. It is the kind of experience that makes you feel like a kid in a candy store.

Iberia regularly schedules at least one Airbus A330 or Airbus A350 flight within Europe each day, and sometimes even two. This particular service was the early morning departure from Madrid to London, offering the chance to enjoy a true long-haul aircraft on a short European sector. For aviation enthusiasts, that is always something special. Widebodies on routes like this are becoming increasingly rare, which makes flights like IB713 from Madrid to London even more exciting.

What makes the experience even better is that Iberia does not just bring a widebody aircraft. It also delivers one of the strongest catering offers in European Business Class. So even though the flight was short, the overall experience still felt premium and memorable. In many ways, this is one of the best types of flights you can take within Europe: a proper long-haul aircraft, a comfortable Business Class cabin, and excellent food, all packed into a quick two-hour journey.

Overall, Iberia A330 Business Class from Madrid to London is one of the most fun and memorable ways to fly within Europe. The chance to enjoy a proper Airbus A330-300 on such a short route already makes this flight stand out, and when you add Iberia’s strong catering, lounge access, and premium cabin atmosphere, it becomes an experience that feels far more special than a normal European Business Class flight.

In this review, I’ll walk you through the full experience from Madrid-Barajas Airport to the Iberia Velázquez Lounge, boarding, the Iberia A330-300 Business Class cabin, the onboard breakfast and service, and the short but memorable Madrid to London widebody flight.ute.

Madrid-Barajas is easily one of my favourite airports in Europe, and every time I pass through Terminal 4, I am reminded why. Architecturally, it is a true gem. The terminal feels spacious, elegant, and full of natural light, creating a far more pleasant atmosphere than many other major European airports. For me, Madrid Airport is not just functional, but one of the most beautiful airport spaces in Europe.

As a Business Class passenger with Iberia, you can take advantage of both the dedicated Business Class check-in area and fast track security, which makes the ground experience much smoother. In my case, I was travelling only with hand luggage, so I did not need to use the check-in desks. I almost always try to avoid checking bags whenever possible, mainly because I have too often been the victim of delayed or lost luggage. Travelling light makes the whole experience easier and less stressful.

Fast track at Madrid-Barajas Airport is a great benefit, especially during busy periods. It helps speed things up considerably and makes the premium experience feel worthwhile from the very beginning of the journey.

Since this was a non-Schengen flight from Madrid to London Heathrow, I had to make my way to Terminal 4S, Iberia’s satellite terminal for many international departures. That means taking the underground train from Terminal 4 to Terminal 4S, followed by passport control. Even though the process is straightforward, it does take a bit of time, and from start to finish I would say it usually takes around 30 minutes.

Still, one of the things I appreciate about Madrid is that even with this extra step, the airport generally feels well organised and easy to navigate. The signage is clear, the transfer process is efficient, and everything tends to flow smoothly.

After clearing passport control in Terminal 4S, I made my way to one of the highlights of flying Iberia Business Class from Madrid: the excellent Iberia Velázquez Lounge.

One of the biggest advantages of taking an early morning Iberia Business Class flight from Madrid is that the Iberia Velázquez Lounge in Terminal 4S is usually incredibly quiet at that time of day. On this visit, the lounge was almost empty, which made the experience feel even more premium and relaxing.

That is a big contrast to the lounge’s busiest periods, which are usually between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, and then again from around 9:00 pm until midnight, when many of Iberia’s long-haul departures leave from Madrid. During those peak waves, the lounge naturally gets much busier. But early in the morning, it can feel like a completely different place.

One of the things I like most about the Iberia Velázquez Lounge is the sense of space. It is a large and well-designed lounge that rarely feels cramped, and even when traffic increases later in the day, it usually handles crowds quite well. That spaciousness gives it a calmer and more premium atmosphere than many other European airline lounges.

The food selection is also very solid. Iberia generally does a good job with lounge catering, and the Velázquez Lounge offers a good variety of options for a pre-flight meal or snack. Combined with the peaceful setting in the early morning, it makes this a very enjoyable place to spend some time before boarding.

Another highlight is the views. For an aviation enthusiast, they are about as good as they can get, with excellent sightlines over the apron and aircraft stands. That alone adds a lot to the experience, especially when flying from one of Iberia’s main long-haul terminals.

In terms of facilities, the lounge is also very well equipped. There is a bar, along with meeting rooms, showers, and even a sleeping area, which makes it one of the more complete Business Class lounges in Europe. Whether you want to work, relax, freshen up, or simply enjoy the views before your flight, the Iberia Velázquez Lounge in Madrid offers a very strong overall experience.

Overall, this remains one of my favourite lounges in Europe. The spacious layout, good food, excellent apron views, and wide range of facilities make it a standout part of the Iberia Business Class experience at Madrid-Barajas Airport.

Around one hour before departure, I left the Iberia Velázquez Lounge and made my way to the gate. I always like to arrive a bit early, especially when flying something more interesting than the usual narrowbody. It gives me time to enjoy the atmosphere, take some photos, and get a few good shots of the aircraft before boarding. On a flight like this, with an Iberia A330-300 operating from Madrid to London, that is very much part of the fun.

As an Iberia Business Class passenger, boarding is done through Group 1, which meant a smooth and priority experience. On this occasion, I was actually the first passenger onboard, which is always a nice feeling. From there, I made my way straight to seat 6A, my window seat on the left-hand side of the cabin.

Iberia’s Airbus A330 Business Class cabin is not the most modern premium cabin out there, and visually it does show its age. The design dates from around 2014, and compared with newer products, it does feel a little plain and lacking in colour. In that sense, Iberia’s newer A350 Next cabin is clearly a major step up, with a fresher and more modern look.

That said, the hard product on the Iberia A330-300 is still very good. The cabin is arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration, which means every passenger gets direct aisle access. That is always a big plus and immediately makes the experience feel far more premium than the typical European Business Class product. Instead of a standard economy-style seat with a blocked middle seat, you get a proper long-haul lie-flat Business Class seat on a short intra-Europe flight — and that is exactly what makes this route so special.

The seat itself is also genuinely comfortable. In bed mode, it stretches to almost two metres in length, and it is wide enough to allow for some movement during sleep. On a long-haul flight, that matters even more, and I have already covered the full long-haul experience on Iberia’s A330 separately. But even on this short Madrid to London sector, it was still a real pleasure to have such a spacious and comfortable seat.

Of course, since this was a European Business Class flight, Iberia did not provide a mattress pad or duvet as it would on a long-haul service. That is understandable given the short flight time. Even so, the seat alone already made this one of the most enjoyable ways to fly within Europe.

Overall, while Iberia’s A330 cabin may no longer be cutting-edge in design, it still offers a very strong Business Class experience thanks to the lie-flat seats, direct aisle access, and comfortable 1-2-1 layout. On a short route like Madrid to London, that transforms the flight from something ordinary into something genuinely exciting.

As mentioned above, this short Iberia A330 Business Class flight from Madrid to London did not include the full long-haul soft product. There was no bedding provided on this sector, and no amenity kit either, which is of course understandable given the short flight time within Europe.

That said, Iberia still offered some features that made the experience feel far more premium than a standard intra-Europe flight. One of those was the availability of noise-cancelling headphones, which is always a welcome touch. Even on a short flight, having proper headphones adds to the sense of flying on a true long-haul aircraft rather than a typical narrowbody European service.

The seat was also equipped with an individual 15.4-inch touchscreen entertainment screen, which immediately sets this product apart from most Business Class flights within Europe. Having a personal screen of that size on such a short route is a real luxury, and it reinforces just how special it is to get a widebody aircraft like the Iberia A330-300 on a flight from Madrid to London Heathrow.

In terms of content, the Iberia inflight entertainment system offered a good selection, with enough options to keep passengers entertained despite the short flight time. That said, the system was not perfect. The main drawback was that the screen did not feel especially responsive, which took away a little from the overall experience. In a more modern Business Class cabin, you would expect smoother performance.

Still, for a short European hop, the entertainment and amenities on this flight were more than sufficient. While the lack of bedding and an amenity kit makes it clear that this is not the full long-haul service, the noise-cancelling headphones and large personal screen still helped make the onboard experience feel much more premium than usual for a flight within Europe.

Around 20 minutes after takeoff, breakfast service began. On a short Madrid to London Business Class flight, timing is important, and Iberia handled it very well. The crew worked efficiently without making the service feel rushed, which is exactly what you want on a relatively short intra-Europe sector.

Breakfast on this flight was genuinely impressive for European Business Class. The main dish was an omelette with mushrooms and grilled tomatoes, served warm and nicely presented. Alongside it came hot bread, extra virgin olive oil, a croissant, juice, and coffee, making for a complete and satisfying morning meal.

The quality of the breakfast was excellent. Iberia has built a strong reputation for catering on many of its flights, and this was another good example of that. Everything tasted fresh, well prepared, and surprisingly substantial for such a short route. For me, one of the small but very welcome touches was the extra virgin olive oil. It is such a simple detail, but it adds a very Spanish touch to the meal and helps the catering feel more distinctive. I honestly hope Iberia never stops serving olive oil onboard.

After breakfast, there was also a small treat to enjoy with the coffee: dark chocolate. That final touch made the meal feel even more polished and rounded off the service in a very pleasant way.

Just as importantly, the service throughout the flight was flawless. The crew were professional, efficient, and warm, delivering the meal smoothly while maintaining a premium feel onboard. On a short European flight, good service can make a big difference, and on this occasion Iberia absolutely got it right.

Overall, the Iberia A330 Business Class breakfast from Madrid to London was one of the highlights of the flight. Between the hot meal, the quality ingredients, the signature olive oil, and the excellent service, this felt far more premium than what you normally get on most European Business Class routes.

Our departure from Madrid was slightly delayed, with pushback coming around 30 minutes late due to traffic in London. Even so, once we left the stand, the taxi to runway 18L was very short, so the flight still got underway without too much additional delay.

It was a foggy morning in Madrid, which gave the airport a dramatic atmosphere during departure. After a lovely widebody takeoff, we soon climbed out of the low cloud and into clearer skies. Once above the weather, the mood of the flight changed completely, and the journey up to London felt smooth and relatively quick.

As often happens on arrival into London Heathrow, the real challenge came at the other end. Because of the usual heavy traffic into one of Europe’s busiest airports, we had to spend some time in holding patterns before being cleared in to land. That is something that can frustrate many passengers, especially after a delayed departure.

Personally, though, I actually enjoy this part of the experience when flying into Heathrow. The arrival stacks often offer the chance to spot other aircraft in the sky, and for an aviation enthusiast that can be a real bonus. On this flight, for example, I was lucky enough to catch sight of a British Airways Boeing 787-9 passing by relatively close, which was a great moment and added even more character to the approach.

Despite the delay out of Madrid and the congestion on arrival into London, the flight still ended very efficiently, and we ended up landing almost on time at Heathrow. All in all, it was a short but very enjoyable journey — made even more memorable by the foggy departure from Madrid, the widebody experience, and the classic Heathrow arrival traffic.

This Iberia A330 Business Class review from Madrid to London shows just how special a widebody flight within Europe can be. While most intra-Europe Business Class flights are operated by narrowbody aircraft with standard seats and limited differentiation, this service offers something completely different: a proper Airbus A330-300 Business Class cabin with direct aisle access, lie-flat seats, a large personal screen, and a much more premium overall atmosphere.

The biggest strength of this flight is simply the aircraft itself. Getting a widebody on a short European route already makes the experience feel rare and exciting, especially for aviation enthusiasts. Iberia’s A330 cabin may no longer be the newest or most stylish product in the sky, and the newer A350 Next cabin is clearly a step ahead in terms of design, but the hard product still holds up very well. The 1-2-1 layout, the comfort of the seat, and the sense of space make this a far more enjoyable flight than the average European Business Class experience.

The soft product was also excellent. On such a short morning flight, Iberia still delivered a very good Business Class breakfast, with a hot omelette, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, hot bread, croissant, coffee, juice, and that signature touch of extra virgin olive oil that gives the meal a distinctly Spanish feel. Add in flawless service and a piece of dark chocolate with coffee afterwards, and the onboard experience felt polished from start to finish.

On the ground, the experience was equally strong. Madrid-Barajas Airport remains one of the best airports in Europe in my opinion, both for its architecture and for how smooth the premium passenger journey feels. The Iberia Velázquez Lounge was another highlight, especially in the early morning when it was almost empty. With its spacious design, good food, excellent views, and useful facilities, it remains one of the best parts of flying Iberia Business Class from Madrid.

If there is one downside, it is simply that the flight is too short. This is exactly the kind of seat and aircraft you would love to enjoy for much longer. On a route of just over two hours, you only get a taste of what the A330 Business Class experience can really offer.

Overall, Iberia A330-300 Business Class from Madrid to London is one of the most enjoyable and unusual ways to fly within Europe. It combines the novelty of a widebody aircraft with a strong onboard meal, excellent service, and a comfortable long-haul seat. For anyone who enjoys premium aviation experiences, this is a route well worth trying.
