Iberia to Add More Airbus A321XLRs for Long-Haul Routes

Airline News

Iberia is preparing to welcome two more Airbus A321XLRs by the end of 2025, boosting its fleet of this new long-range narrow-body jet to six aircraft. The final two from its order of eight are scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2026.

Despite one A321XLR being out of service after a bird-strike incident in Madrid earlier this year, the airline remains committed to expanding the type. Iberia currently flies the model on routes from Madrid to Boston, Washington, and San Juan, with Recife (Brazil) joining in December 2025 and Fortaleza in January 2026. Future destinations could include Toronto and Philadelphia.

The A321XLR can fly up to 8,700 km with 182 passengers in two classes, while burning about 30% less fuel per passenger than previous narrow-body long-haul aircraft. Iberia introduced the type in late 2024 and now sees it as a cornerstone for its transatlantic growth strategy.
